World heart day takes place every year on 29 september for raising awareness about cardiovascular disease that includes heart attack and stroke. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the biggest cause of death worldwide.
According to world health organization (WHO), an estimated 17 million people died annually from (CVDs). Cardiovascular disease are group of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels. They include:
- Coronary heart disease
- Cerebrovascular disease
- Peripheral arterial disease
- Rheumatic heart disease
- Congenital heart disease
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pulmonary embolism
- etc.
One-forth of the deaths from Cardiovascular diseases occur in low and middle income countries because of having less access to effectual health care facilities. Coronary heart disease is the disease of the blood vessels supplying blood to the heart muscles, and cerebrovascular disease is the disease of the blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. Heart attack and stroke are related to a process called atherosclerosis, in which fatty deposits build up on the inner walls of blood vessels that supply the heart or brain. This buildup narrows the arteries and prevent blood flow to heart or brain.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain and discomfort in center of chest, arm, left shoulder, elbow, jaw or back.
- Additional symptoms are light headache or faintness and cold sweat.

Rheumatic heart disease is a complication of rheurmatic fever and a group of acute and chronic heart disorders caused by permanent damage to the heart valves and heart muscles.
Mostly children are affected from rheumatic fever. In deaths due to (CVDs), about 2 percent of deaths occur because of rheumatic heart disease. Symptoms of rheumatic heart disease include:
- Fever
- Shortness of breath
- Pain and discomfort in chest
- Swollen and painful joints
- Irregular heart beat
- Fatigue
- Painless rashes
- Fainting
