WHAT IS HICCOUGH?

Hiccough also known as hiccup is a quick and involuntary inhalation. It is the spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm that results in uncontrolled breathing in of air; which causes closure of the glottis, thus producing a characteristic sound.



    PHYSIOLOGY

    Diaphragm is the muscular partition, it separating the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. Glottis is the opening between the vocal cords.
    An overdistention of the stomach, irritation in the foodpipe, nerve spasms or various metabolic disturbances results in uncontrolled breathing in of air; causes closure of the glottis, here a specific sound produces like hicc---up.


    CAUSES

    Hiccups is usually caused by:

    • Over intake of food especially hot and spices
    • Eating very quickly
    • Swallowing air during eating
    • Alcohol consumption
    • Drinking sodas
    • Nerve spasm
    • Strong emotions and stress
    • Fear or excitement
    • Various medicines


    RISK FACTORS

    Hiccup is an involuntary and spasmodic condition. It is not dangerous but sometimes may cause following complications.

    • Problems related to eating
    • Problems related to sleep
    • Shortness of breath
    • Coughing up blood
    • Abdominal pain
    • Vomiting
    • Fever

    TREATMENT

    First of all, follow these steps. Most patients of hiccups get relief with them because they are helpful if your hiccups are less-serious.

    • Drink water or Gargling with water
    • Hold your breath for 20 seconds and repeat this practice after every 15 munites
    • Pull your tongue
    • Biting a lemon or squeeze a lemon in water and drink it
    • Smelling of salt may also heal hiccups
    • Create gentle pressure on your diaphragm
    • Place some sugar under your tongue or swallow sugar
    • Place gentle pressure on your nose for 20 seconds


    HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES FOR HICCOUGH

    Magnesium phos-6x, 12x

    This is the primary medicine of hiccup. Use 2 to 4 tablets of 6x or 12x potency of meg phos after every 10 munites. As you get relief increase duration between doses.  

    Ginseng Q

    For acute hiccups 15 drops per dose every 15 minutes along with Magnesium phos.

    Cyclamen-30

    For chronic hiccough cases, use 5 drops three times daily in water or direct on tongue.

    Ranunculus bulb Q

    Only 5 drops twice a day if hiccups begin after consumption of alcohol.

    Acidum sulph-30, 200

    Persistent chronic hiccough. 30 potency 3 to 4 times and 200 potency only once 5 drops per dose.

    Nux vomica-30, 200

    Hiccough relieves temporary after meal. Hiccough in infants. 30 potency 3 to 4 times and 200 potency twice daily 5 drops per dose.

    Chamomilla-30

    Hiccough of infants. 5 drops in tablespoon of water.

    Cinnamomum Q 

    Three drops on sugar for abolishing hiccups. Use twice daily.

    Kalium brom-3x, 30

    For pregnant women. 3x tablets 2 to 4 tablets, 30 potency 5 drops after an hour. Increase duration between doses as get releif.

    Moschus-30

    For hysterical cases, espeically in young women given every 10 minutes 5 drops.

    IGNATIA-30, 200

    For hysterical cases, hiccup comes when he or she mentally upset. For example know about business loss, death of relatives etc.

    Stramonium-200

    Use 5 drops one dose daily if hiccough are convulsive and violent.

    Cuprum-met 6,30

    Hiccough abates after drinking water. Hiccough associated with nausea and spasmodic colic. Eructations and difficulty in breathing.

    Natrum Mur-6x, 30

    Violent hiccough in malarial patients.
