 INTRODUCTION TO ANATOMY

ANATOMY DEFINATION

The word Anatomy is derived from Greek word Anatom which means cutting up. It is the branch of medical sciences which deals with the structure of human body. 

OR
It is the study of the structure of the human body and of the relationship of its constituents parts to each other.
OR
It is the science of the structure and function of the human body.



    BRANCHES OF ANATOMY

    Anatomy is divided into variuos branches. Some famous branches of Anatomy are:


    CADAVERIC ANATOMY

    Cadaveric anatomy is also known as Macroscopic anatomy or Gross anatomy. It is the division of anatomy which deals with the study of the dead preserved body usually with the naked eyes.

    REGIONAL ANATOMY

    It is the geographical study of the human body. We study body in regions or parts e.g thorax, abdomen, head, brain, limbs etc.

    SYSTEMATIC ANATOMY

    It is the study of the human body system. Like skeletal system, muscular system, vascular system, urinary system etc. 

    LIVING ANATOMY

    Living anatomy deals with the study of body by inspection, palpation, percussion, Auscultation, endoscopy, radiology, electromyography etc.

    SURFACE ANATOMY

    Surface anatomy is also known as Topographic anatomy. It is the study of deeper parts of the body in relation to the skin surface.

    RADIOGRAPHIC ANATOMY

    It is also known as imaging anatomy. It deals with the study of bones and deeper organs by plain and contrast radiography by ultrasound and C.T scans etc.

    OSTEOLOGY

    It is the knowledge of bones.

    ARTHROLOGY

    It is the knowledge of joints.

    MYOLOGY

    It is the study of muscles.

    NEOROLOGY

    It is the knowledge of nerves and nervous system.

    DERMATOLOGY

    It is the study of the skin of the human body.

    ARCHEOLOGY

    It is the study of veins and arteries.

    HISTOLOGY

    It is the study of the fine structures of the human body with the aid of microscope.

    EMBRYOLOGY

    It is the study of the prenatal development of gametes or sex cells, fertilization, development of embryos, fetuses etc. and congenital disorders that occur before birth (teratology).

    GENETICS

    It is the study of genes, genetic variation and heredity in living things.

    COMPARATIVE ANATOMY

    It is the division of the anatomy which deals with the study of anatomy with other animals to expalin the changes in structures of different parts of the human body. 

    CLINICAL ANATOMY

    It is also known as applied anatomy. It is the study of diagnosis and treatment. Or, it is the study of practical application of anatomical knowledge.

    GENERAL ANATOMY

    It is the branch of morphology that deals with the structure and body parts of living things.

    SURGICAL ANATOMY

    It is study of tissues and organs for surgical purposes.

    PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY

    It is the division of anatomy which deals with the external features and measurement of different reces and group of people and with the study of the prehistoric remains.

    EXPERIMENTAL ANATOMY

    It is the division of anatomy which deals with the study of the factors which influence and determine the form, structure and function of different parts of the body.
